Book Reads from 2014

I’ve been coming across a lot of year-end book lists. I haven’t kept track of everything I’ve read, but here’s a list of random titles based off my GoodReads profile.

Five Star Books

Four Star Books

Three Star Books

One Star Books

I don’t challenge myself to read a lot of books. Quality over quantity is really important to me when it comes to the words and worlds we consume. Sometimes, I’ll start a book and stop reading it because it’s not as captivating or interesting as my standards demand…or if I do manage to get through it, I give it a lower rating so other people are warned.

Did you read any books last year? I’m always looking for recommendations. Find me on GoodReads or BookLikes if you’re around!

  1. I added The Savage Detectives and The Conversations to my To Read list. They sound interesting. I feel bad when I don’t like a book. So instead of just getting over it, I let it sit there and don’t read anything else. Then eventually I stop reading it but I’ve already wasted those precious reading days. I definitely need to work on that!

    1. Yes! Bolaño’s Savage Detectives is a heady one but well worth it. I don’t even know how to explain the plot to people, except to say it’s about “a gang of poets in Mexico.” One of my favorite books–not only of last year, but ever.

I found Aira’s The Conversations in a trashcan, haha. I picked it up because I liked how small it was, and the cover art, and the blurb on the back. Glad I did. I started & finished reading it at the airport on my way back home from the holidays. Another all-time favorite; I’m going to check out the rest of Aira’s work this year.

I used to feel bad when I didn’t like a book–I’d keep telling myself to keep going, it *might* get better, etc. Now I’m a lot more brutal about what I read. No mercy.

…now if only I could do that with other aspects of life 😀 Have fun reading this year!

  2. My goal for this year is to read more. So I’m super stoked to come across this list! Thanks to good reads my list isn’t looking too bad. Haha now if only I wasn’t so picky!
