Today’s quote is brought to you by one of my artistic and literary heroes, the incredible Yukio Mishima.
Here’s an excerpt from his film, Patriotism (The Criterion Collection) (or, the Rite of Love and Death).
It’s his only film, but it’s a wonderful painting worthy in its own right as cinematic and expressive. This scene is not for the faint of heart; it showcases seppuku (ritual suicide), which is how Mishimia would later end his life after a failed attempt at overthrowing the Japanese government.
I could go on and on. I won’t. Instead, read this wonderful essay on the film by Tony Rayns, Patriotism: The Word Made Flesh. What a title!
If you’re interested, I recommend reading some of Mishima’s varied works. He wrote one of my favorites, Sun and Steel. His well-known works include The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, The Sound of Waves, Spring Snow: The Sea of Fertility, 1, and The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea.
